WATL: Humpday

Good Afternoon to you all (if indeed you are reading this in the afternoon, I guess you might just have woken up at three in the morning with horrific, painful stomach upset and are just looking for something to distract yourself from the fact that your arse is currently attempting to remove Augustus Gloop and get back to being a chocolate river) and welcome to – what I hope to be – the new weekly post from the Lolocaust team.

It’s been a weird few months for me personally.

As many of you already know, my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2016 and while the outlook was bleak, he stubbornly refused to be dragged down for as long as he could before passing away just after Christmas 2017. I didn’t have the greatest relationship with my Dad, but over the last few years we got closer and I was glad to be able to assist my step mum with his care (albeit on a very limited scale in comparison to what she gave him). The funeral went well, I read out something I had prepared – I was going to post it up here, but I don’t think I want it *out there* really – and I was told by lots of people I’ve never met that I did great and that my Dad would have been proud. That’s about the best we can hope for, I guess.

Coupled with all of this the cinema I work at went under, then was purchased by a company who has put a lot of effort and money into getting it back to its best, which has kept me busy since I was promoted to Manager.

All of this means that in all honesty I haven’t had much motivation to write on here, to play games (other than mobile ‘distractons’) and I want this to change.

So.

Wednesday – Humpday – is now my ‘game day’ where I will play, write and enjoy the interactive delights around.

That’s not to say I’ve not played anything. I have ran through most of Assassin’s Creed Origins (Loved It), Finished both Uncharted 4 and the Standalone DLC (Loved them) as well as playing through the Xbox One edition of Dear Esther, which led me to finally get around to playing Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture (loved them). This week I’ve ordered Far Cry 5 and I have been tazzing around Paradise City courtesy of my EA Access membership. The game looks as good as ever, but the higher frame rate shows off how damn fast that game can get. Burnout Paradise was the reason this site, podcast etc… exists and going back to it, TEN FUCKING YEARS after it released, was like putting on a pair of old slippers, grabbing a pasty and having a wank.

I am also looking forward to getting the first ‘Exclusive on Release’ title – Sea of Thieves – with my Game Pass Membership. I love the concept of giving away first party exclusives to those who pay the fee, and it makes the Game Pass cost seem absolutely negligible. I had Sea of Thieves on pre-order, but now I’ve saved £45 by just being a good little consumer. I only wish Microsoft would offer a Xbox Live Platinum Membership which bundles Xbox Gold and Game Pass, that way I wouldn’t run out of one without the other. Game Pass is ridiculous value – especially to people who don’t rush out and buy everything. Without it I would never have gotten around to Mad Max, Rime or Super Lucky’s Tale, all of which I have been enjoying greatly, and now to get Sea of Thieves as well, superb. Makes a mockery of Sony’s streamed game offerings.

Now I know what you are thinking, ‘When is the podcast back?’ and I don’t have an answer for you at this time. My mental health has not been great so creating stuff is complicated by the fact that sometimes I can’t even knock on a door, let alone make plans and stick to them. I have recorded a couple of spots for the Dem Drunk Blokes Network, which you have hopefully heard and I did write a six episode ‘series’ of episodes that dealt with my ‘Difficult Year’ but they are so ridiculously dark and unfunny I fear it would simply result in my family locking me up. I might revisit them, at some point. I love podcasting, so fingers crossed if I can stick to this weekly plan I should be able to make time for planning and preparing for something to stick in your ears very soon.

So, that’s me for this week. What have you been playing recently? Get in touch in the comments below – or on Twitter @Bouncybhall – and I’ll work your replies into next week’s post.

Oh and I should be attending EGX Rezzed in April on the Friday. If anyone is keen on meeting up, tickets are on sale and it is a nice chilled day out.
